Hurricanes Take the Gold
Article by Rayburn Hesse of Spysoftball.com Team New Jersey Showcase
The competition racheted up a notch when the Gold Coast Hurricanes, the defending Gold national champions, came to play on Saturday, winning all four games. The 2008-09 Hurricanes have lost eight of the players who carried them to the championship in Oklahoma City, but, thanks to a multi-tiered organization, which many Gold teams do not have, the Hurricanes were able to bring up some very talented 16s and 18s from within their own organization.
FL Hurricanes 2, NJ Intensity 0. From the first game on, Coach Marty Cooper was using at least two pitchers per game. This first game was effectively decided in the 2nd when 2010 infielder Rachel Slowik jacked a 2-run home run. A double play in the 5th ended an Intensity threat. NJ pitchers Brittany O’Donnell and Cara Stecher limited the GCH to two hits, O”Donnell striking out 7 in her three innings.
FL Hurricanes 5, WA Ladyhawks Wayne 1. Rachele Fico (LSU) held the Ladyhawks to one hit in her four innings; a very promising 2011, Leslie Jury, finished and gave up the LH run, Taylor Thompson scoring on a passed ball. The Hurricanes went long. Kasie Hatfield 2010 hit two 2-run home runs. Brienna Rojas 09 hit a solo shot. The Hawks shut off a scoring threat in the 5th with a double play.
FL Hurricanes 1, TX Storm Larry 0. Slugger Kasie Hatfield 2010 doubled in Kaitlyn Sambito 2010. Hannah Rogers and Kylie Vry shared pitching duties for the Hurricanes. Our notes show Anne Marie Taylor as one Storm pitcher.
FL Hurricanes 3, Shamrocks 2. The Shamrocks took the early lead, 2-0. The GCH got one back on a home run by Cara Vitale (UNC). In the 3rd, Kelsey Horton (Florida) singled in two runs. Leslie Jury 2011 started for GCH; Rachel Fico (LSU) pitched the last three innings. The Shamrocks used pitchers 2011 Morgan Lashley; 09 Airel Keidel.
Hurricanes meet Katie Courik
FL Hurricanes 9, WJ Witches 1
The college coaches agreed that 2011 pitcher Lauren Walker has a bright future in D1, but she and the Witches were outgunned by the defending Gold national champions – who reached down into their farm system and rebuilt a contender. Kylie Vry started for the Hurricanes; Hannah Rogers pitched the lst two innings.
In the 3rd, Kaitlyn Sambito doubled in two runs, Natalia Ojeda and Rachel Gillen scoring. In the 5th, the GCH loaded the bases; sharp fielding cut down two runners at home, but 2010 Sambito singled in two more runs and Kelsey Horton doubled in two runs for a 6-1 lead.
Brienna Rojas 09 added to the total with a solo home run, her second of the weekend. 2010 Tori Pettine scored the Witches run in the 2nd.
